Promise Keeper

Scripture Readings

From Genesis to Revelation, we see how God keeps his promises.

In today’s Psalm passage, David faces enemy oppression. Fear and terror overwhelm him. He wants to escape to somewhere far away. David was raw and honest before God, trusting him to protect and answer him. David was a man after God’s own heart because he had a heart for God. He held onto the promises God gave him – even when it took many years for them to come to pass.

In Joshua 21-22, we see the Israelites finally receive what God had promised them forty years earlier. However, one whole generation had to disappear before God honoured the promise. Joshua 21:43 says that the Lord gave to Israel ALL the land which he swore to give to their fathers. Every promise God had spoken to their fathers was fulfilled. Verse 45 tells us that, “Not one of the good promises which the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.”

Eternal life is the ultimate promise of God. He provided the way with the sacrifice of his only Son, who nailed every sin we ever committed to the cross – that’s how much he loves us. (John 3:16) Death has been conquered by Jesus’ resurrection, and if we believe in him, we receive eternal salvation. God gives us a choice. He doesn’t force us into anything. How awesome a promise!

When we look at the state of the world today, we are left wondering how it will all turn out, how God will deliver on promises. However, when we stay focused on the Father, we are able to see life from his perspective. He will turn things to work into his will. We see people connecting in new ways, intimate family relationships being formed, and a new way of spreading the gospel occurring. We are bonding, one with another. We are all in the same boat, rowing the same waves. Now Jesus is calling us to step out of the boat, come to him with faith and trust him to take us across the waves. He brings us peace in our hearts as we learn to give everything over to him and hide under his shelter. May we remain faithfully trusting him. Jesus is coming back for his bride to fulfill his ultimate promise!
