Approximate size of a mustard seed: o

Do you have that size of faith?

Jesus says if you do, “NOTHING will be impossible for you” (Matthew 17:20b)

Today, we’ll focus on Matthew 17:1-21. Jesus rebukes a demon out of a boy that has the authority to cause seizures and often drives him into fire and water. Prior to the arrival of Jesus’, Peter’s, James’ and John’s arrival (Matthew 17:1-14a), the disciples present could not drive out the demon. They later asked Jesus why.

The answer is: faith. Jesus says in verse 20a (NLT) that their faith was “[not] enough” or in NIV: “so little.” Essentially, they did not have the measure of faith required to drive out the demon’s measure of authority. What is faith and how does one get it?

Hebrews 11:1, 6a says, “faith is confidence in what we hope for, and assurance about what we do not see … without faith it is impossible to please God.” Moreover, to each one God has assigned a “measure of faith” (Romans 12:3c). Matthew 17 mentions three “measures of faith”:

1. Unbelief (v. 17)

2. “So little” (v.20a)

3. “Small” (v. 20b)

Other measures of faith are: “little” (Matthew 8:26), “great” (Matthew 8:10) and “complete” (James 2:22). Each measure of faith has a different impact on the natural and supernatural realms. In today’s passage, the disciples’ “so little” faith left the boy afflicted with seizures in the natural realm and afflicted with continued demonic torment in the supernatural realm.

Jesus could have left the disciples at “you have so little faith” (v.20a). In his grace, he also provided hope: “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, nothing will be impossible for you” (v. 20b).

Small faith and more is available to you. It comes through hearing the word (Romans 10:17) and leaning deeply into him with child-like faith (Matthew 18:3-4) as he calls you to act in faith. May you read his word and believe! May you lean deeply into God and act in faith while “[FIXING] your EYES on JESUS – the author and perfector of [your] faith” (Hebrews 12:2a)! Then, “NOTHING will be impossible for you” (v. 20b) in Christ Jesus!

Reflection: What is Jesus calling you to do by faith?
