Passing on Faith

Scripture Readings

One of my favourite TV shows is “Antiques Roadshow.” I love how people have these unique items and can bring them to find out their value. I am sometimes surprised at which things are valuable and which are not! I also love to hear the stories behind some of these treasures! Sometimes it is a thrift shop or garage sale find; other times, it is some kind of heirloom piece that has been passed down through the family. Often, when it has come down through the family, the owner will comment that regardless of the monetary appraisal value, it is something they would never part with. To them, the real value is in who it was connected to.

The older I get, the more I think about legacy--what has been passed to me and what I am passing on to others. I think of the many people who have influenced my life and faith. By the time you read this, my father is about to turn 99 years old! His life and faith has had (and will always have) a lasting impact on my life. It is his legacy to me.

Can we pass along faith?

In 2 Tim. 1:5, Paul says to Timothy, “I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” Timothy’s faith was clearly his own, but in Paul’s estimation, he had the wonderful influence of two godly women--his mother and grandmother. Godly influence, role models, mentors in life and faith--how we need these in our lives!

Who were/are some of these influences in your life and Christian walk? Can you take a moment to thank God for them now?

Who are some of the people in your life that may need the godly influence that you can give? Your children, your grandchildren? A friend? A new believer? Ask God what part He may want you to play in praying and/or mentoring someone in life and faith and what that might look like!

The legacy of faith may be the best one you can leave your family and friends!
