Scripture Readings

To understand Revelation 18 you must know the background to Babylon. Genesis 11 describes the first organized revolt against God when man began to build a city, called Babel, with a great tower that would reach into heaven, This was so they could make a name for themselves, lest they be scattered over the face of the earth. Babel was later called Babylon.

Isaiah was told in 14:4-23 to take up a taunt against the king of Babylon. The taunt makes it plain that this king is Satan. Since Babel, that city has been Satan’s center of attacks against God and His people as summarized by Revelation 18:24 where in her was found the blood of the prophets, saints and all who were slain on the earth. If there are any who don’t believe that God has the power to enact the destruction of Revelation 18, read Isaiah 14:27 and Isaiah 43:13.

This leads to, in my opinion, the best chapter in the Bible, Revelation 19. It starts with saying salvation and glory and power belong to our God because His judgements are true and righteous. He has judged the great harlot, introduced in Revelation 17:5-16 (see the readings for December 26) , and He has avenged the blood of His bond-servants on her.

Psalm 148 was introduced with praise and worship and Rev 19 continues with praise and worship. The praise and worship of 19:3-6 leads directly to 19:7. Here, the marriage supper of the Lamb has come and His bride, the church, has made herself ready. It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean, representing the righteous acts of the saints. What a time of pure joy this will be when Christ receives his bride, us, his church.

Are you ready to receive that invitation to the marriage supper? Have you said yes to Jesus, the Lamb of God, as your LORD and SAVIOUR?
